An honorary doctor is an honorary title awarded to a person who has made particularly significant contributions to the higher education institution, promoted its research or otherwise contributed to its development.
Honorary doctors are appointed by the faculty board and conferred at Södertörn University's academic ceremony in February each year. The right to nominate honorary doctors rests with students through the student union and university staff.
Criteria
The nominee must have collaborated with Södertörn University and, through their work, affirmed and strengthened the university's vision, ethos, identity and role in society.
The nominee must not be employed by, or hold a licentiate or doctoral degree from, Södertörn University. Nor may the person have previously been conferred a doctoral degree in the same field at another higher education institution in Sweden.
Honorary doctor can be
- a person who has been awarded a doctoral degree and who has been of great importance to the university's research, education or collaboration, or
- a person who, by virtue of other, non-academic, prominent merits and contributions in fields such as culture, popular education, civil society, the public sector or business, has been significant and inspiring for the higher education institution's research, education or collaboration

Submit your nomination to SöderS no later than Thursday 15 May 2025! Your nomination must include the person's name and a statement explaining how the person has particularly contributed to the university according to the criteria above.
SöderS then compiles the proposals and sends the nominations to the faculty board no later than Friday 16 May 2025.
